So much fun! This outdoors event was tented, catered and offered family friendly entertainment, including music by Charlie Red and the Full Flava Kings, face painting, raffles and much more! Different local perinatal providers, including chiropractors, herbalists, doulas, birth centers, etc., were present to connect with families. Swag bags full of breastfeeding information and necessities were also given away.

Montika Collins is the co-founder and co-president of Innovations Family Wellness Inc., a 501(c)3 organization that is leading health education and outreach for birth & breastfeeding across all socioeconomic, racial and cultural backgrounds.

Why Breastfeeding? Breastmilk has been proven to have significant health benefits for babies, including lowering risk of infections, diabetes, obesity and infant mortality rates. In Tulsa, only 49% of mothers breastfeed up to 6 months, even though the World Health Organization recommends at least 2 years. Innovations Family Wellness INC is working to increase our numbers in Oklahoma and normalize breastfeeding statewide, especially for black communities that are affected by significantly higher numbers of infant and mother mortality rates.

This event is held during National Breastfeeding Month AND Black Breastfeeding Week because we believe that improving the health disparities in Black & POC communities begins with education on the benefits of breastfeeding and nutrition.
