The Benefits of Balanced:
Have you ever been told you’re a ball of nerves? Do you constantly feel like you are about to lose it? Do you feel overwhelmed by stress and anxiety? Well, you’re not alone! An estimated 31.1% of U.S. adults experience any anxiety disorder at some time in their lives. Anxiety disorders are higher for females (23.4%) than for males (14.3%).
What is Ashwagandha?
For thousands of years, Withania somnifera popularly known as Aswagandha, Indian Ginseng or Winter Cherry has been used to help relieve symptoms of anxiety, stress, infertility and improve concentration. It is a plant that is native to India and Southeast Asia. The root and/or leaves are extracted and blended to make a powder or a tincture for use in herbal medicine. It’s classified as an adaptogen, a substance that helps the body cope with stress, therefore its most popular use, and what we primarily suggest it for, is stress/anxiety.
The Science:
Ayurvedic medicine is where the use of Ashwagandha started. Ayurvedic treatment starts with an internal purification process, followed by a special diet, herbal remedies, massage therapy, yoga, and meditation. Goals of treatment aid the person by eliminating impurities, reducing symptoms, increasing resistance to disease, reducing worry, and increasing harmony in life. Herbs and other plants, including oils and common spices, are used extensively in Ayurvedic treatment.
It has since become a part of holistic medicine in the US because of the benefits it has shown. Ashwagandha appears to help control mediators of stress, including heat shock proteins (Hsp70), cortisol, and stress-activated c-Jun N-terminal protein kinase (JNK-1). It also reduces the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, a system in your body that regulates the stress response.
