What is Fire Cider?

When most people think of cider, they tend to think about a sweet Apple cider, or a different sparkling cider they enjoyed on New Years Eve. I used to be one of those people. But now when I hear the word “cider” my mind immediately jumps to apple cider vinegar or fire cider. I guess that’s what happens when you start making your own remedies!

Fire Cider is a folk remedy that Rosemary Gladstar popularized. It is an apple cider vinegar infusion. It generally includes, horseradish, ginger, onions, garlic, and hot peppers. Oftentimes it includes citrus as well. The beauty about folk remedies is that you can change the recipe based on what is available to you, or your preference.

Total Family Wellness’ Fire Cider includes the following:

  • Red Onion

  • Garlic Cloves

  • Orange

  • Lemon

  • Rosemary

  • Thyme

  • Ginger

  • Jalapeño

  • Horseradish

  • Turmeric

  • Cayenne

Fire cider boosts immune responses, benefits digestion, serves as a general tonic, and is a great way to warm up on a chilly day. It is absolutely delicious but it is extremely warming. It is a staple in my house as the weather gets cold! It takes at least 6 weeks to prepare. After your herbs have infused for 6 weeks+, you strain it really well and add honey to taste.

Did you know there was a lawsuit filed over fire cider? A company tried to trademark the name “fire cider” and was sued over it. It’s a really interesting story to read about if you haven’t already. If you’re curious about what happened but want the spark notes, the company started sending cease and desist letters to other herbal companies telling them to stop using the name “Fire Cider”. People fought back. As the author of the HuffPost article wrote, you can’t trademark tradition. The company recently went out of business.
